Chapter 5

Jake's Determination

It was an unshakeable sensation. Not for a moment. Emma was the only thing I could see whenever I closed my eyes or attempted to divert my attention with work. The coldness in her voice when she spoke, the way she winced as I approached, and her eyes. She had something something significant to conceal. It seemed heavy and oppressive in the air between us.

She assumed I would just leave her alone. Go away once again. As if it were that easy. However, it wasn't. This time, I wasn't going anywhere.

I needed to know what had transpired.

What had caused her to vanish? For five years, where had she disappeared to? Above all, why had she entirely shut me out of her life?

That day, I saw her leave the café with a rigid back and hasty feet, as if she couldn't get far enough away from me. But I couldn't ignore it. Not right now. Not after everything.

I needed to discover the truth.

The days that followed seemed to go very quickly. I tried to focus on my job and everything else while I was in the city, but my thoughts kept coming back to her. To the coldness in her words, to the way her face had stiffened the instant I walked up to her. She had been so alien, so odd.

I began to question if the lady I knew was still alive.

I was unable to stop myself. I couldn't abandon her to keep her secrets to herself. Even if it meant stepping beyond boundaries I never would have imagined, I wanted to know what was happening.

I began to follow her.

Although it wasn't the most honorable thing to do, I didn't have the luxury of being noble after all that had transpired. I wanted answers since Emma had totally cut me off. I was concerned with learning what had changed her and what had made her reject me, even if I didn't want to acknowledge it.

It began modestly. I would sometimes drive by her house to check on her and make sure everything was as it should be. I would then pretend to peruse the bookshop where she worked in the hopes of catching a peek of her. However, she was always wary and guarded when I saw her, and her eyes were always darting about as if she was waiting for something

someone to appear. Her inability to unwind and her constant glance over her shoulder were unnerving.

She never acknowledged me, however. never looked at me more than once.

I felt sick to my stomach. It infuriated me. However, it also strengthened my resolve.

I needed to know what was happening. It was not possible for me to see her ruin herself.

My curiosity grew as I saw more. Too many things were beyond my comprehension. In all these years, why hadn't she gotten in touch with me? How had she fared?

I followed her down a little street one evening as the sun was setting and creating lengthy shadows. I was cautious, I had to confess. Too cautious. But with Emma, I'd learned to use caution. She constantly seems to notice things that she shouldn't.

At first, she didn't notice me. She was absorbed in her phone, idly browsing through it. My breath hitched, however, as she paused at the corner and looked over her shoulder.

She was aware.

She knew I was there somehow.

With my heart pounding in my chest, I ducked behind a parked vehicle and pulled back. It was too late. She had noticed me.

I couldn't simply walk out right now.

I continued to observe her, attempting to interpret the expression in her eyes. Fear? Uncomfortable? Or was it something more profound, something she kept from me? For a long time, she stayed still as if she was trying to decide what to do.

Then she turned and left, walking faster, as if something within her had broken.

I inhaled deeply as I saw her retrenchment and then trailed after her.

I followed her directly to the park.

I remained back, concealed in the tree shadows, not knowing why she was there.

She stopped as she got to the swings. She seemed to be waiting for something because of her strained stance. Someone.

My throat constricted. Unspoken tension seemed to sizzle in the air between us, and I resisted the temptation to yell at her and demand answers. However, I was unable to. Not quite yet.

Then someone showed there, just as I had expected.

A man.

He wore all black, was tall, and had wide shoulders. Even though I couldn't see his face well, I could tell all I needed to know from the slow, methodical manner he moved.

He was a significant figure. Someone who poses a threat.

I saw Emma shatter for the first time as he walked toward her. I saw something different in her eyes as the icy façade she had placed around me appeared to slip away. Something I was unable to pinpoint exactly.

Was it a sense of relief? Fear?

It was difficult to tell. It didn't matter, however.

He was meeting with her.

She nodded, her body language relaxed as the guy leaned in to talk quietly to her. Too laid back.

What I was witnessing was unbelievable. My thoughts raced, and my stomach wrenched. What was happening? She was meeting with this guy, but why?

And why was she behaving as like nothing was wrong?

For as long as I could, I watched them communicate in the shadows, my pulse thumping in my chest. I didn't have to listen to what they were saying. There was something between them, the way they stood so close.

It wasn't just business, however.

Anger washed over me with a chilly wave of envy. Who was this man? How had he affected her?

The guy eventually turned and left, vanishing into the night. Emma watched him go, her face impassive, and then she turned to leave, returning to her starting point.

Even though I didn't know what had occurred, I wasn't going to let her get away with any secrets she may have been keeping.

I went back to her apartment after her.

I wasn't sure what I was anticipating; either a confrontation or a means of obtaining answers. However, I was horrified by what I saw when I got there.

Her door stood ajar.

My body tensed as I took a step closer. The door was ajar as if someone had just hurried out, not merely open.

For a time, I stood there considering my choices. I could knock. She may be called to. However, what if she wasn't alone?

I did not want to frighten her. I didn't want to exacerbate the situation, but this was too crucial.

I took a trembling breath and entered.

The silence in the home seemed uncanny.

Then I noticed it.

A picture on the ground, face down.

I had no idea what it meant. However, I was aware that I wasn't alone in my search for solutions.

My hands shaking, I stooped to pick up the picture and froze as I turned it over.

Emma was seen in the photo with the same park guy.

As Jake becomes increasingly committed to learning the truth about Emma's background, this chapter leads him down a sinister and fascinating road. His compulsive actions result in a revelation that adds to the mystery and creates an exciting cliffhanger that makes readers want to learn more.
