Dancing with Devils
Dawn painted New York's skyline in shades of gold and red, but Luca couldn't appreciate the view. His hands were still shaking from what Viktor had made him do last night. The captain's begging eyes would haunt him forever.
He stood at the window of his new "room" - a luxury prison on the penthouse's top floor. The place was bigger than most apartments, with a king-sized bed, elegant furniture, and a bathroom that looked like it belonged in a palace. But the door was locked, and cameras watched his every move.
A soft knock stopped his dark thoughts.
"Come in," Luca called out, not turning from the window. He expected guards, maybe bringing food.
Instead, Viktor's words filled the room. "Good morning. I trust you slept well?"
Luca's muscles tightened. "Like a baby. Amazing how killing an old friend helps with sleep."
"Ah, still bitter about that?" Viktor stepped closer, his image appearing in the window glass. "It was necessary. The old guard had to fall for the new order to rise."
Finally, Luca turned. Viktor looked annoyingly fresh in a crisp white suit, while Luca was still wearing his bloodstained clothes from last night.
"What do you want?"
"To offer you a change of clothes, for starters." Viktor pointed to a rack that servants were wheeling in. "I took the liberty of having some things brought over. We're about the same size."
Luca eyed the expensive clothes. "Playing dress-up with your prisoner?"
"Partner," Viktor corrected smoothly. "And you'll find I take care of what's mine."
The protective tone made Luca's skin crawl. "I'm not yours."
"No?" Viktor smiled, reaching out to fix Luca's collar. "Then whose are you? Your family's? Oh wait..."
Luca grabbed Viktor's wrist, squeezing hard enough to hurt. But Viktor didn't flinch - he actually looked pleased.
"There's that fire I admire," Viktor purred. "Get cleaned up. We have a busy day ahead."
"Doing what?"
"Learning to trust each other, of course." Viktor pulled his hand free with surprising power. "A doctor will be here soon to check your leg. Then we'll tour the business you've inherited."
"You mean the operation you stole."
"Semantics." Viktor walked to the door. "Oh, and Luca? Don't try anything stupid. The windows are bulletproof, the doors are steel-core, and every guard has orders to shoot if you step out of line."
"Sounds like a lot of precautions for a 'partner.'"
Viktor's smile turned sharp. "Trust is gained, my dear enemy. Just like respect."
After he left, Luca examined the clothes. They were exactly his style - dark clothes, quality materials. Viktor had been studying him for longer than he'd thought.
The doctor arrived soon after, a nervous man who treated Luca's leg cut with shaking hands. Smart - being afraid of both patient and boss.
Once cleaned and dressed in one of Viktor's clothes, Luca had to admit he felt more human. The fabric was great, the fit exact. Even the shoes were his size.
"Much better," Viktor approved when he returned. "Now you look the part."
"The part of what?"
"My right hand, of course." Viktor's eyes gleamed. "Come, let me show you what you've gained by losing everything."
The trip was...surprising. Viktor's business wasn't just bigger than the Moretti family's - it was different. More business, more modern. They had legitimate companies, political connections, even a charity foundation.
"See? This is how powers are built in the modern age," Viktor explained as they walked through a high-tech security center. "Not with bullets and threats alone, but with ones and zeros, paperwork and partnerships."
"My father would call it soft," Luca commented, watching the wall of screens showing every part of Viktor's territory.
"Your father is dead, and his methods died with him." Viktor's voice was cold. "Evolution or destruction, Luca. That's the only choice we have."
They spent hours going through Viktor's property. Each stop showed Luca something new - something his family had never considered. By afternoon, his head was spinning with options.
"Impressed?" Viktor asked as they rode the lift back up.
"Curious," Luca admitted. "Why show me all this?"
"Because I want you hungry for it." Viktor stepped closer, his cologne filling Luca's senses. "I want you to see what we could build together."
The elevator doors opened to the top. Evening had fallen, the city lights twinkling below like falling stars.
"Join me for dinner," Viktor said. It wasn't a request.
The dining room was intimate - just a small table set for two, candles giving most of the light. Classical music played softly in the background.
"Very romantic," Luca mocked, taking his seat.
"I believe in setting the proper mood." Viktor poured wine for both of them. "Even for business discussions."
The food was excellent - course after course of gourmet meals. They ate in silence at first, watching each other across the flickering candlelight.
"Your brother called," Viktor said suddenly. "He wants to know if you're dead yet."
Luca's knife scraped against the plate. "And what did you tell him?"
"That you're very much living. And evolving." Viktor sipped his wine. "He didn't like that answer."
"Marco never liked anything he couldn't control."
"Unlike you?" Viktor raised an eyebrow. "You seem to be adapting well to captivity."
"Maybe I'm just biding my time."
"Maybe." Viktor leaned forward. "Or maybe you're starting to see the options. Tell me, Luca - what did you think of our operation?"
Luca considered his answer carefully. "It's...impressive. Different from what I expected."
"Different from what your father taught you?"
"My father taught me to survive."
"I want to teach you to thrive." Viktor's eyes caught the flame. "But first, you need to let go of the past."
"Like you let go of yours?" Luca challenged. "I know your story, Viktor. The exiled prince of the Russian mob, making his own kingdom in America. Running from your own family's shadow."
Something dangerous flashed across Viktor's face. "Careful, my dear enemy. Some shadows are better left undiscovered."
"Why? Afraid I'll see the real you?"
Viktor smiled, but it didn't reach his eyes. "The real me? Oh, Luca. You're not ready for that. Not yet."
He stood suddenly, walking to Luca's side of the table. "But soon. Very soon."
Viktor's hand fell on Luca's shoulder, squeezing just hard enough to remind him of the power dynamic between them.
"Get some rest," Viktor whispered. "Tomorrow, we start your real education."
"What's that supposed to mean?"
"It means," Viktor leaned down, his lips brushing Luca's ear, "that dinner was just the starter. The real game begins at dawn."
He straightened up, headed for the door. "Oh, and Luca? Dream sweet dreams about your old life. Because after tomorrow, nothing will ever be the same."
Left alone in the candlelight, Luca touched his ear where Viktor's breath had ghosted across his skin. A shiver ran down his spine - not entirely from fear.
In his pocket, his fingers found something that hadn't been there before - a small key, slipped in during Viktor's final touch. A test? A trap? Or something else entirely?
The candles burned lower, leaving dancing shadows on the walls. Somewhere in the building, Viktor was watching, waiting to see what his hostage would do.
Luca rolled the key between his fingers, feeling its weight. The game was changing, growing into something he didn't quite understand.
But as the city lights twinkled below and the key burned in his pocket, one thing became clear: tomorrow would bring either his rescue or his downfall.
The choice, like everything else in this dangerous dance, was his to make.
