Chapter 5
Nikolai…
“Demetri, please tell me we’ve got a lead on this Donovan Brown dude. I don’t care how tiny it is! Just give me something!”
I’ve been chasing this Donovan Brown for a whole year, and I haven’t gotten a single lead on him. Just when we think we’re onto something, he always manages to slip away. "Also, can you three-" I gesture to Jessy, my best buddy, Louis, who’s into weapons, and Demetri, our hacker. "Can someone explain why I have $100,000 missing from my account?!"
"Which one of you is going to break the news? Because it wasn’t my idea," Louis chimes in.
"Not mine either. I’ve been up all night trying to track down Donovan Brown," Demetri adds.
They both turn to Jessy. "Ihiredanassassinto trackdownandeliminateDonovanBrown," Jessy blurts out.
"Could you say that a bit faster, Jess?" I reply with a smirk.
Jessy finishes his drink, takes a deep breath, and looks at me. "I hired an assassin to hunt down and kill Donovan. But before you freak out, I only hired her yesterday, and she found and took him out in just a day! You can even call Anna right now; she’s on a jet to Colombia to drop off Donovan’s body to Miguel Perez!"
"I don’t need to call Anna because I know you’ll only mention her when you’re being honest. What I want to know is who the heck you hired that could track him down and kill him in just one day?!" I ask, finishing my drink and ordering another.
"Ever heard of the Angel of Death?" Louis asks.
"Yeah, I know her. She’s the top assassin in the world and a fierce underground fighter." I take a sip, swallow hard, and look at Jessy. "Wait, you didn’t-"
"Oh, he definitely did," Demetri says with a smirk.
"How on earth did you manage to get her to take you on as a client? I’ve heard she’s nearly impossible to get in touch with!" I say.
She seems to have a thing for taking out people who hurt underage girls and others, especially those we've been tracking for ages. According to Jessy, she finds it pretty entertaining.
"Honestly, that's pretty attractive. A woman who's an assassin and a fighter? I’d love to meet her." Just as I finished saying that, a gorgeous girl walked through the club entrance.
She was rocking a blue minidress that hugged her curves perfectly, with long blonde hair flowing down her back. What caught my eye was her confident stride, like she owned the place. She definitely didn’t seem shy; she looked like someone who knows exactly what she wants. There was just something about her that made me want to learn more.
I couldn’t quite put my finger on it, but I was determined to find out.
“Nikolai, hello?” Jessy said, snapping his fingers in front of my face. I glanced at him and shrugged, “Do your thing.” I waved him off. I needed to figure out how to grab her attention.
What’s wrong with me? I’ve never felt like this before!
“You do know you’re engaged, right?” Jessy pointed out, glancing at the woman I was fixated on.
“Not yet, at least.” I stood up and made my way to the bar, excusing myself.
