Mila's Pov
I stared in awe as the masculine man came closer to me. He exuded authority and power. He stood tall, his broad shoulders squaring off against the room. The sharp lines of his jawline and chiseled features seemed chiseled by the moon goddess herself. Although his piercing gaze sparkled with anger, it was drawing me in like an ocean.
I know I shouldn't be drooling over a man this way, I couldn't help it. He walked over to me and squinted his eyes. I gulped hard. As if he felt, the bonding, he frowned and froze when our eyes met. He didn't speak a word and left. I stared at his retreating figure, confused. It was obvious he felt the mating bond. Or was it something else?
Almost immediately, another man walks in with a smile.
"Hello. You're awake," he said, clasping his hands together in delight
"Yes, I am. But where am I?" I asked, still confused.
"Well, this is Mystic pack, and I am the Beta, Max. And it turns out that you collapsed at the border," he explained.
This Max guy doesn't seem all that bad. "Who brought me here,"
"Well, I did. I couldn't just leave someone who was almost dying out in the open," he replied.
"Is the wolf dead?" I asked, feeling somewhat guilty and relieved at the same time.
"Don't worry. Those were rogues and they wanted to kill you. I think you crossed their territory or something. They are better off dead anyways," Max said.
I nodded and yawned. I was famished. I hadn't eaten anything yet.
Max smiled as my stomach growled.
"Before I ask you all the questions that need to be asked, let's get you something to eat," he suggested and I half smiled.
"That'll be nice," I responded
"I'll have the maids bring in food for you," he said.
"No. I don't want to stress anyone. I can just go out and get the food myself. I could use a walk to clear the fog in my head," I objected.
Although it didn't seem like he liked my idea, he nodded anyway.
I felt a little bit relieved as I didn't want to leave here just soon. My mate was here and it was that guy that just came in. I need to know who he is and why he frowned when he felt the mating bond.
As we walked, I tried bringing up the conversation with him.
"Mystic pack huh?" I began
Max paused for a moment without turning around. "Is there a problem with that?" he asked.
I bit my lips. I think I'm beginning to bite more than I can chew here. "No. There's nothing wrong. I haven't just expected to be here,"
He continued walking and I knew better than to continue talking, so I kept mute.
We walked over to a long dining hall and Max gestured for me to take my seat, which I did. By now, my stomach was grumbling and I had to make shuffle noises with my feet to distract the noise. Before long, a tray of different dishes was served in front of me and I smiled, satisfied.
I started eating so fast I felt my throat would burst open. The dishes were much I just skipped from one to another. I didn't care about etiquette and all those things that I'd been taught in my previous pack. I just ate like someone who had been starving. Well, technically, I've been starving.
I felt a strong pleasant presence in the room and stared at Max. It was obvious he was disgusted by the way I eat, but who cares? They would throw me out of the pack once I was done eating. So I would eat as much as I can so it can sustain me till my next meal. I looked behind me and found the source of the presence. It was him. My second chance mate. He was staring at me as if I was the next thing to a trash can. I knew he was going to reject me, because who wouldn't? Given the way I am eating?
Max stood up abruptly and bowed. Why was he bowing? Wait...Max said he was the Beta. Who was higher than the Beta? It's the...
"Hello, Alpha Adrian," Max greeted.
Something in me snapped.
Adrian's POV
Max came to my study unannounced. It wasn't something he would do.
"Is there a problem, Max?" I asked
"Kind of. Although not really," he replied, almost inaudible.
"What is it?" I asked.
"You know you ordered some of our men to catch those rogues that had been stealing from the pack for a while now?" he began
I nodded. "So?"
"Well, they weren't on standby today and I think the rogues attacked a she-wolf," he explained.
I felt my heart skip a beat. How could this have happened? I stood up abruptly. "Was she hurt?"
Max nodded. “She is hurt, but not much. She collapsed by the borders. I brought her into the quarters and ordered some maids to tend to her,'‘ he continued.
"Let me see her to confirm," I ordered and started walking out, with Max following behind.
I walked out of the study toward the quarters. I wasn't a caring man and people feared me. But I wouldn't sit down and watch wolves get injured because of the mistake of the men I implored to do the smallest task.
As I neared the door, I felt a great bond and a very soothing fragrance. I knew my mate was in there. I could feel it. I opened the door of the room and saw the most beautiful set of eyes I have ever seen in my life. I felt my heart about to explode. I stared at her and her eyes sparkled with interest. No. I can't have a mate now. This was the worst time for me to have a mate. I frowned and walked over to her. I should be happy that I have finally found my mate. But I was not. I wasn't happy that I had found my mate. I frowned deeper. I could see the confusion written all over her face but
I didn't care. I turned around and left.
