The Accident

Chapter Two

I dry my tears with a tissue from my bag and take in a deep breath.

My life as I knew it was over. What was I going to do. How could I have missed this?

My body is still trembling from the rage and betrayal of it all. How could they do this to me? The two people I loved the most, trusted the most, and the funniest thing is they had the nerve to treat me like I was a jealous bitch, like my feelings weren’t valid.

My sister was kissing my husband half naked and their excuse was that things got “out of control”. I laugh humorlessly. How stupid did they think I was. Very stupid if I haven’t discovered them all this time.

The signs were always there, right in my face but I ignored it, brushed it off because there was no world where this was a reality for me.

I can’t breathe in this car. All of this is too much. I need some air to think and process it all. Immediately the car stops in front of a traffic light, I get down and take off running, my heels pounding against the concrete, tears streaming down my face blinding me as I ignore the driver calling out my name, I ignore panic bleeding through his voice.

I hear other people calling out and look back to find out what the source of the noise is but it’s too late. I wasn’t paying attention to my surroundings.

It isn’t until I hear the blast of the horn, the screech of tires and feel the sickening crunch of metal and bone, feel the intense pain in my abdomen and see the pool of blood around me that I realize I have been hit that my world fades into blackness.

I wake up to the sounds of machines beeping and the harsh smell of antiseptic filling my nose. I open my eyes to see my driver who looks at me with a mixture of worry and relief.

“Mrs. Greyson. You’re awake. Thank goodness! Don’t move, I’ll get the doctor.” He says and rushes out the door.

A pretty doctor with auburn hair pulled into a ponytail and a friendly smile on her face, walks into the room, a minute later. She picks up my chart and looks through it.

“Hello Mrs. Sinclair, I’m Doctor Stevens. You got into an accident. Don’t get up. Try to relax.” She gently eases me back to the bed after I jolt up.

“Do you remember what happened?” She inquires gently while checking my vitals.

Then it all comes rushing back, me going to my husband’s office, finding him and Chloe together, the accident. I remember feeling a sharp pain in my abdomen and seeing blood around me.

Panic rushes through me. I clutch her hand in a death grip, she pauses from checking out my heartbeat with a stethoscope.

I ask, panicked, “Doctor, my baby! Is my baby okay? Tell me my baby is fine. Please!”

She looks at me sympathetically. Her lips drawn in a fine line.

“No, it can’t be true! It can’t be.”

“I’m sorry Mrs. Sinclair, there was nothing we could do. You aren’t badly injured but you lost a lot of blood and had to give you a transfusion……We’ll like to keep you for a night or two to observe……”

I don’t hear anything the doctor says. Her words just filter through my ears, the world seems to have lost all it’s color.

I search the room for my husband. He should be here. With all that’s happened but I don’t see him. My eyes land on my driver instead.

“Mr. Finn? Where’s my husband? Didn’t you call him?” He looks away, unable to meet my eye.

“Look at me Mr. Finn. Why isn’t my husband here?” My tone, hardened He looks up at me pity bleeding through his gaze.

“I’m sorry Mrs. Sinclair, I-I tried reaching him several times. His secretary said he was busy and when I dialed his cell, well, your sister picked up the phone and said he wasn’t available.” He looks conflicted.

“I didn’t want to leave you alone to go and get him.” For a minute I don’t speak. The silence in the room is palpable, and then I crack.

This is perfect, just perfect. Hysterical laughter bubbles out of me. My chaffeaur showed more concern for me than my husband.

Mr. Finn steps forward, looking concerned and the doctor looks like she’s about to sedate me for my own good.

This was perfect, just perfect. Even at this moment when I needed my husband the most, he was with another woman, my sister, for that matter.

At that moment, I make up my mind. I turn to the doctor with a smile on my face.

“Thank you doctor but I would like to be discharged today.” Her brows shoot up in concern.

“Well, sustain any major injuries but you lost a lot of blood I would recommend you stay under observation for at least a night.”

“Thank you for your concern but I believe I’m not at any risk anymore. Please process my discharge. There is an urgent matter I have to see to at home.” I state calmly.

She looks like she’s about to argue with me but whatever she she’s in her eyes makes her change her mind. She turns and leaves after telling me a nurse would be in to help me out with the discharge process.

I turn to Mr. Finn who is still looking at me regretfully like he failed me or something. I smile at him because I know the reason why.

“Mr. Finn, I can tell based on that guilty look in your eye that my grandfather sent you to watch me. What are you ex- military, navy? You had to have had some combat training I believe?.” His head shoots up, surprise coloring his features.

“Marines. When did you find out?” My lips curve upwards slightly.

“Oh please, do you think I would believe for one second that that old man would let me leave Europe and start a ‘new life’ without keeping an eye on me? My grandfather wouldn’t employ someone he didn’t believe could me to watch me. Even if he were dead, he would still find a way to stalk me.”

His warm brown eyes warm over at the joke I made and they turn serious again from my next statement.

“It’s for that reason I’m sure you’ll be discreet about the miscarriage.”

“Ma'am?” I give him a look and he nods curtly.

“Of course.” He replies.

I pause for a moment. “Did you hint at the fact that I was in the hospital?”

“No ma’am. Only that there was an urgent message for Mr. Gregory.” He says slowly.

“Good. Inform my grandfather about everything but tell him not to take action. I’ll handle this myself. Ensure no word about the accident gets out. I don’t want anything traced to me. Including the hospital bills.”

“Yes ma’am. I’ll do just that.”

“Thank you Mr. Finn. I’ll like some time alone now.”

“Of course.” He responds.

I watch as the stout figure of the middle aged man disappears from my view.

I pick up my phone from the bedside table and dial a number. They pick up after one ring.

“Hello, it’s me. About your proposal, is it still open? I’m ready to get the plan rolling but we have to be careful about this. Let’s meet up in two days. I’ll send you the address soon. Thanks. Bye.”

As I drop the phone on the counter, a cold smile steals it’s way across my lips.

I won’t just stop crying over them, I’ll make sure that they pay for all the betrayal I’ve suffered at their hands. I’ll take back everything that belongs to me or die trying. The game has just begun.
