Chapter 2
She let out a gasp as she found herself in Lucas arms.
“Well, well, Harper,” her ex-boyfriend breathed into her ear, sending chills up her spine and not the good kind too. “Did you enjoy fucking him so much that you were in such a rush to break up with me?”
“Lucas, please,” Harper shook her head. While she was happy when she and Lucas were together, Harper hadn’t allowed the relationship to progress into any form of physical intimacy, feeling like that the relationship was too new at the time. She knew how this must have looked from his point of view and she didn’t blame the man. “Please don’t do this.”
Lucas doubled the strength of his grip on Harper’s wrist when the omega tried to pull away. Harper winced as the man drew her closer. “Don’t worry, Harper sweetheart l, I won’t make a scene here. But I will have you back before you know it. You’ll see.”
Harper barely registered what her ex-boyfriend said before she was passed onto another dance partner.
What did Lucas mean? What was he planning to do? Harper could not just walk off the dance floor as well. Not to mention that it would be in very bad taste if she sought out her ex- boyfriend people would think it was something else.
She saw Ethan talking to two men near the balcony doors and went to join her mate. If Anna was right, her wildly beating heart and shaking hands should be better once she was near her mate.
She sighed. She just never expected to see Lucas again.but then again they all ran in similar circles meeting him was inevitable.
The alpha immediately introduced him to Emma Willson , who was his secretary , and Henry Thomson, who was the head of security.
Harper was pleased to find out that her best friend was right as she exchanged pleasantries with Ethan’s staff. She was also comforted by how the three of them were obviously close, they were laughing and talking over each other quite a lot.
She told herself to put a smile on her face throughout the rest of the wedding party because she felt as if she. cheeks were about to split.
She finally let out a long sigh when she was able to sit in her car, alone, in the cover of darkness. Who knew pretending to be happy could suck so much of her energy?
Harper let out another sigh. She wanted to go home but remembered the movers she had at her apartment earlier that day would have brought all her things to Ethan’s penthouse apartment so she had nowhere else to go.
She parked her sedan next to Ethan’s SUV and fidgeted with the keys. They have really had the chance to talk about their new living arrangement.
She hadn’t even seen Ethan’s apartment yet but somehow, she knew that her life would never be the same the moment she stepped into her mate’s space.
She made her way up and found the alpha waiting just outside the door. The young man had changed into more casual clothes. “Hi. Come on in.” Ethan gave her an hesitant smile as he held the door open and gestured for Harper to enter.
Harper shrugged her jacket off.
“I’ll take that.” Ethan plucked it from her grasp and laid it over the back of the couch. “So, the living room and the kitchen,” he waved a casual hand around. “It’s not much. I don’t really cook and I have someone come in and clean once a week.”
Harper nodded and bit his lower lip. The living room alone was probably the size of her old apartment.
“There are only two rooms. I figured you would probably be uncomfortable sleeping in my room so I put your stuff in the other room. Feel free to use whatever’s in here. I usually leave early and get home late so you can eat whenever you want. I had the housekeeper do the groceries earlier this week .”
“Thank you, Ethan,” Harper smiled. She was partially glad she didn’t have to see her mate every day.
Their schedules did not seem to cross and she had enough space to claim for herself.
The alpha rocked on the balls of his feet. “So, uh, good night, Harper.” And Without warning, he grasped Harper’s chin and pressed his lips to the omega’s.
Ethan pulled back just as quickly and practically rushed to his room without another word. Harper felt heat creep up her cheeks.
She touched a fingertip to her lips and let out a disbelieving snort as she shook herself from her sudden daze. She was not some starry-eyed schoolgirl but the butterfly-flutter in her stomach evidently told a different story.
Ridiculous.
She entered her room and flopped onto the bed after loosening her tie and toeing her shoes off. She had planned to unpack but had underestimated the exhaustion she felt and immediately fell asleep in minutes.
