JUST HUMAN

“fuck” i muttered, as the ceiling came into view, a pounding headache accompanying it as i tried to adjust to the bright light.

“here” i heard that gentle voice again, the one i heard before passing out. I opened my eyes to see him properly, fangs out with blood dripping down his wrist without a care in the world while he brought the said wrist to my mouth.

“are you here to finish the job?” i said, looking at him with a brave front, even though i was anything but brave at the moment. He looked at me for the briefest of seconds before he took me by the jaw, prying my mouth open forcefully and brought his wrist closer to my mouth, making it impossible not to smell the blood that dripped from his hands.

I felt my recoil from disgust “i can’t give you much or else the queen would notice but this should ease up the pain a bit” he said, still in that gentle voice.

He gave me no time no time to react or respond as he shoved the wrist into my hand, making sure to get a bit of blood into my mouth.

“Why are you helping me?” I asked, looking at him with distrust filling the pits of my stomach.

“Why wouldn’t i help you?” he asked, looking at me like i had grown a second head.

“i just.. Well” i said nothing as the blush covered my face. Making me feel slightly embarassed.

“Look, i am not here to harm you. If anything, I want to help you” for the life of me i could not believe in what universe he would want to help me.

“if you really want to help me, you would let me go. Look, i am a good person” i said, eying the chains he brought out from the wooden box that was at the other side of the cell.

“I wish it was that simple, but I am sorry. Whether you like it or not, you have been branded as a bride for a vampire” I looked at him like he was crazy, checking everywhere on myself to see if there was any branding mark.

There was none

“Lola… it is not something you can see with just your eyes, you have been scent marked and… “ he stopped, looking at me with wide eyes as i stood before him frozen. For some reason, that name sounded oddly familiar even though no one had ever called me that name before. “you need to get some rest, i just offered you…” he said instead but i cut him off.

“That name you just called… that is not my name” i said.

He looked at me with shock in his eyes for the briefest of seconds before he nodded.

“That’s right, you do not know yet” he sighed.

‘He definitely is crazy’ i sighed, looking at him.

“i am sorry i have to do this, the queen requests that you are tired down” he said, bringing the chains close to me.

I almost rolled my eyes. There was no need to act as though he was any less a monster. The fact stood, they did not see me as someone that should be treated with respect, the ‘queen and Jeremiah’ made it certain.

I threw my head to the side, trying as much as possible to not look at the chains as they were being brought closer and closer to me.

“it would be just for a while” he said, securing the chains around my wrist and legs. “the queen was just riled up, seeing your necklace and…”

I tried to pry of the chains from my hands. “get this off” i said, as the burning feeling around my wrist became more and more unbearable.

“look i am sorry and i promise that i would get you out as soon as…” i zoned him out, trying my possible best to get the chains out of my hands by myself. It hurt.

It felt as though hot water was poured around my wrist and then ants were crawling around my body, it was hell.

I screamed, feeling as though i was thrown into boiling oil. “you said… you would not harm me” i said, looking at him with tear filled eyes, he looked for a moment, scared.

Looking as though he did not know what to do. “please” i said, the burn making it unbearable to breathe properly.

It was as if my begging triggered something within him, as he rushed to yank the chains off my hands and feet. I gasped, the feeling of relief washing through my body as he removed the chain.

“you really are a Halfling” he said, looking at me with wide eyes, like he was looking at me for the first time.

I scurried as far away from him as possible. There was no way i was going to believe that he did not do that on purpose, whatever it was that he had just done.

“don’t run, i have promised not to hurt you” he said, like it was the most obvious thing and i was not meant to try and fight for my life, running far to the hills while screaming bloody murder.

He pulled my legs to himself, massaging the places that were already forming scars.

“i can’t believe you walked back into my arms… Lola” he said, looking at me with a smile in his eyes. I was scared, too scared to speak.

I sat there as he did whatever it was he wanted to do.

“i am sorry, i did not know you would react to the silver, i thought you were just human” he said, not looking sorry at all but at the same time, his voice was as soft as ever.

I shivered, trying to get that pain out of my system. ‘j..just human?” i asked, looking at him to explain what i had heard. Because the last time i had checked, i was very much human….
