The Seeds of Doubt
Lucien stood motionless, his gaze fixed on the door long after it had closed. His mind was a storm of conflicting thoughts, each one threatening to drown him in uncertainty. Sebastian's words echoed in his mind, relentless, insistent.
"She’s been manipulating you, Lucien. She’s the one pulling the strings."
A wave of anger surged within him, but it was quickly replaced by something far more unsettling: doubt. Could Sebastian be right? Could Aria have been using her gift to control him all along?
He clenched his fists, the nails digging into his palms, but no amount of pain could stop the whirlwind of confusion that tore through him. Aria was… different. He knew that. He could feel it every time she was near him, that strange connection between them that was both maddening and irresistible.
But was that connection real? Or was it something she had carefully crafted, using her powers to make him feel something that wasn’t truly there?
His thoughts were interrupted by the soft sound of footsteps approaching. Aria. The one person he couldn't stop thinking about, even when he wanted to. She had been watching him, manipulating him, but was she doing it on purpose? Or was there more to the story?
He turned to face her, his expression colder than he intended. “I need answers,” he said, his voice sharp, cutting through the silence. “I need to know what you’re really after, Aria. What game are you playing?”
Aria didn’t flinch. Her eyes were calm, calculating, but there was a hint of vulnerability in them that Lucien couldn’t ignore. She was hiding something, and he wasn’t sure if it was her secrets or her true feelings. Maybe both.
“I’m not playing a game,” she replied, her voice steady. “I never was.”
Lucien’s frustration flared. “Then what the hell is this?!” His hand swept across the room in an angry gesture. “You’ve been toying with me from the moment you set foot in this house. Everything you do, everything you say—it feels like manipulation!”
Aria remained composed, her expression unreadable. “You’re wrong,” she said softly. “I never wanted to manipulate you. I never asked for any of this.”
Lucien took a step toward her, his eyes locking onto hers with an intensity that could’ve melted glass. “Then why did you stay? Why did you let me believe you were just a maid when you were so much more? What do you want from me, Aria?”
Aria hesitated for a moment, but only for a moment. Then she stepped closer, her gaze never leaving his. “I didn’t want to get involved with you, Lucien,” she said quietly. “But I had no choice.”
Lucien’s brow furrowed in confusion. “No choice? What do you mean?”
For the first time, a flicker of something deeper than cold calculation crossed her face. “I wasn’t sent here by accident,” she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper. “I came because I had to. I came because of you.”
Her words hit him like a punch to the gut, leaving him breathless. “Because of me?” he echoed, his voice trembling despite his best efforts to keep it steady.
Aria nodded, her gaze steady, unwavering. “I wasn’t just sent to watch you, Lucien. I was sent to… control you.”
Lucien felt the blood drain from his face. The ground beneath him seemed to shift, as if the very foundation of his world was crumbling. He had known there was more to Aria than met the eye, but this? This was something else entirely.
“What do you mean, control me?” he asked, his voice a whisper, as though the words themselves were too dangerous to speak.
Aria’s eyes darkened, her expression hardening. “You don’t understand. There’s more at stake here than you realize. More than just us. My mission—my purpose—it’s bigger than you or me. And you’re a part of it.”
Lucien’s mind was spinning. “What mission? What purpose?”
But Aria didn’t answer right away. She took a step back, as if trying to distance herself from him, but her gaze never wavered.
“I can’t tell you everything,” she said quietly. “Not yet. But I will. In time, I will explain it all. But first, you need to understand something.”
Lucien felt a knot tighten in his stomach. “What’s that?”
“I never wanted to hurt you, Lucien.” Her voice was raw, as though the words were tearing her apart. “But I had no choice. And now… now I’m not sure what I want anymore.”
The vulnerability in her voice, the way her eyes shimmered with something that could’ve been regret, struck him like a thunderbolt. Could it be that Aria, the woman who had seemed so cold, so calculating, was feeling conflicted? Was she really torn between her mission and her feelings for him?
Lucien didn’t know what to think anymore. The doubts that had started to take root in his mind were growing, twisting into something darker. Aria had always been a mystery to him, but now, she was something else entirely—something dangerous, yet… real.
As the silence stretched between them, Lucien knew one thing for sure: the game was far from over. And no matter what happened next, he was already too deep to back out.
