You Seem....Distant

Elena

The morning sun casted a pale light across the room through the thin curtains. I sat down at the edge of bed recollecting yesterday's memories while touching my hair.

Lucian’s hand on my skin, his breath mingling with mine. And the way he looked at me– like he wanted to have me but he couldn't.

I pressed my hands into my thighs, trying to ground myself. I was being delusional and i knew this had to stop – whatever that was steering between us.

He was a Beta. I was an Alpha’s fated mate.

Duty before desires. This has how it had always been in our world.

A knock came on the door, sharp and impatient. “Elena, you're being summoned.” I recognized that voice instantly. It was none other than Nicole. The pack self-declared gossip queen.

I rose slowly, tugging on a simple T-shirt and jean shorts before pulling my hair into a low braid. As I opened the door, she leaned in and smirked at me.

“Kael is waiting for you.” She said sweetly–too sweetly.

My stomach dropped.

“What for?”

Nicole shrugged, tossing her blonde curls over her shoulder. “I don't know, maybe to talk about your upcoming bonding.” She said with her voice dripping with fake innocence.

I didn't reply.

As I moved past her, I caught her whispering to another girl down the hall.

“Poor thing, she doesn't even look excited. Many girls would kill to have this opportunity.”

Well they could have him for all I care. I said as I clenched my hand and continued walking.

Downstairs, the training field was bubbling with activities. Young wolves sparring and laughters echoing.

I scanned the grounds, looking for Lucian without intending to.

I found him few seconds later.

He stood near the tree side, speaking with Rowan. Lucian dark hair ruffled by the breeze, his arms crossed and muscle tensed beneath his training shirt.

I didn't know if he's pretending not to see me or he actually couldn't.

“Elena!” a voice called.

“I swear.” I scoffed and turned to see Elara striding towards me. She looked effortlessly perfect as usual– her dark auburn hair lapsing around her shoulders.

“You look tired.” She said with a fake laugh.

“Must be from last night's training.”

“I'm fine.” I said shortly.

I didn't want to prolong the conversation.

Then her smile widened, with eyes gleaming with something that wasn't quite kind.

“Funny, I could swear Kael had his eyes on you longer than anyone else. Must be nice, having all that attention given to you.”

I quickly glared at her. “Well i didn't ask for it.”

“Of course,” she said tilting her head. “You didn't, but you get it anyway.”

There it was.

That old bitter resentment.

The fact I was able to awaken my wolf at fourteen, meanwhile she struggled with hers at 16.

The fact Kael chose me over her.

“I've things to do.” I muttered, stepping past her.

Her laughter followed me down the path, till I could no longer hear it.

Kael was waiting near the Alpha’s den, accompanied with two guards.

“Elena,” he said warmly, stepping forward.

I swallowed the lump in my throat as I bowed slightly in respect.

His smile was quick and confident.

“Walk with me.”

I didn't have a choice.

We strolled through a path behind the den, the world was quiet except from the crunch of leaves beneath our boots.

“I wanted to speak to you in private.” He said after a moment.

“You've been …distant.”

“I've been busy” I said as I kept my gaze forward.

He chuckled lowly.

“I know adjusting to your role isn't easy, but soon you will be standing my side as my Luna. I want us to be free with each other.”

That word Luna hit me like a blade.

I didn't respond as I was afraid something I wasn't planning would slip out of my mouth.

Kael reached out, brushing a strand of hair away from my face. “You are everything we need love. You were born for this.”

No I wasn't .

I forced a tight smile. “Thank you.”

He studied me for a while. “I know this isn't easy for you, Elena, but trust me …it's only a matter of time.

I nodded because it was safer than disagreeing.

We walked back towards the training ground, his hand grazing my lower back lightly –possessively, but i guessed he didn't notice.

Or maybe he did, but he didn't just care.

As we neared the clearing, Kael paused suddenly, speaking to Rollins, his personal spy lowly.

I slowed my steps instinctively, staying out of sight behind a huge oak tree.

“You're sure?” Kael said, his voice sharp.

Rollins nodded. “Lucian’s been acting suspicious. He also spends more time her. Others have noticed too.”

“She's mine.” Kael hissed. “I want every moment reported back to me.”

I backed away slowly. my heart racing.

They knew.

They knew.

Even if nothing had happened, They already knew.

This was a bad start. He was already suspicious.

I barely made it across a field when a shadow appeared behind me.

Lucian.

He stood there, with his jaw clenched.

“Are you good?” He says lowly.

I forced a smile, nodding.

“I'm alright.”

I knew he could tell I wasn't alright. He looked so unconvinced.

“Stay away from him.” He said.

“Kael?” I blinked. “ What do you even mean by that?”

I could see his jawline clenching. “I'm serious Elena, be careful.”

There was this sharpness laced with his voice. Something like a protective edge that made my heart ache more.

I was about to respond when Nicole's shrill voice interrupted me.

I rolled my eyes and turn to look at her.

“There you are, Elena! Kael is looking for you again.”

I glanced at Lucian helplessly. He gave me a slight shake of his head, like he wanted to stop me but he couldn't.

I exhaled slowly and followed Nicole back to the den, feeling Lucian’s gaze burning through my back.
