Chapter Four
Bethany's POV
“What do you mean. I have half of the amount right here and you're really not going to do anything?” I was in disarray standing before the doctor in the office who barely glanced at the check on the table.
“I would barely call that half the amount. You do realize your sister have been eating free for the past one month now. You've only been providing money for her medications and her night duty nurse. If we compensate the cafeteria for their services, you still owe alot for the surgery.”
“Doctor Raymond you don't even know what I did, what I had to go through, the things I had to get this money,” I pointed to the check on the table, fingers shaking. “This is just wickedness at this point. Come on, I sacrificed everything I possibly had, down to using my last resort. What else do you want me to do? Give up and just let my sister die?”
He sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose before he snatched the cheque. “This can help us start her official treatment but If you want the surgery to be perfroned on her, you better get the full medical bill paid before next week.”
“Next week… “ I wiped my eyes. “what do you mean next week. This is more than a million we're talking about.”
“Well, your sister has been on life support for the past two months and her body system can't handle it anymore. It's already failing her at this point and she won't be able to make it at this point.”
Even as I left the hospital, the words of the doctors echoed in my head. I couldn't even bear to face my sister. I could only watch her from the transparent glass window watching her sleep silently with the heart rate monitor beeping beside her.
My lively sister, a whole bundle of energy was now a ghastly pale thin girl at the verge of death.
On the road, people stared at me like I was crazy as I cried shameless, shaking with the effort of my tears and anger.
My sister was going to die and I couldn't do anything about it.
I tried calling Joel. It was shameless of me but I had no choice. However, I realized he had blocked my number for good because even his number wasn't in existence anymore.
Crushed, heartbroken, I dropped to my knees, tears running down my cheeks bitterly. Suddenly, I received a call, and upon seeing it was step mother calling, I picked up without hesitation.
“Hello…” I said firstly, my breath caught in my throat as I anticipated her next words.
“How much did you say the hospital bill was?” Her voice was nonchalant, but I could tell she sounded serious.
“It's 2 million dollars but… “
“I'll send you 3 million dollars. The money is not a problem,” at her words, I finally got up from the floor, holding onto the railing of a streetlight to support my weight, my vision clouded with my tears. “But are you ready for the cost that comes with it. You know 3 million is a huge amount of … “
“I'm up for anything Step Mother Joyce. Anything at all. I don't care even If it means selling my soul to the devil. I will do it.” I said with so much determination in my eyes, not caring about the stray glances I got from passerbyes.
“Good you're cooperating well. A woman named Mira will call you in a few minutes and will you give you directions to a Courthouse. There, you will be legally engaged to someone who is currently in a need for a fiancee.”
The story didn't make sense at all. But at that point, I knew I had no reason to protest.
“Are you up for it or should I take my money else where?” She saidher voice laced with bitterness.
“Wait. I'll do it, but who is the manbi will be getting engaged to? Didn't this Mira tell you anything about him?”
“No. I've told you all I know. She initially wanted Vivian but since I wasn't aware of who the scumbag she'd be getting engaged to is, I had no other option but to calm you. Besides, Vivian has already found her mate.”
I gripped my phone hard, feeling my heart clench in pain as I whispered, “You knew.”
“You'll receive a call soon. Send your account details and I'll transfer everything once you're done signing the required documents.”
“And how am I sure you'll keep to your end of the agreement.”
“Well, you don't have a choice do you?” And with an evil chuckle, she cut the call.
True to her words, I received a call from Mira and I took a cab and in a few minutes, I had arrived at the location. I tried to straighten my worn out gown out and fix my hair but she stopped me outside.
A van suddenly pulled up behind us and Mira explained. “Before he arrives, you'll have to be well presented before him. You're his future wife after all.”
Before I could even protest, I was taken into the van. I was changed into one of the most expensive gowns I have ever seen, shimmering with real diamonds and hugged my body curves perfectly.
The shoes and the make up, including the
Jewelry - everything was so expensive, things I would never have even dreamed of wearing. I was certainly convinced that whoever I was about to get engaged to was very rich, but it still didn't comfort me knowing I didn't know anything about him.
Soon, accompanied by Mira and two guards, I was escorted into the courthouse. Right there, I saw a man already standing there. I narrowed my eyes, wondering he seemed familiar and when he turned and those green eyes met mine, I froze in my steps.
“You!” His voice was cold as he glared at me and I felt my throat dry up as I stood there, fidgeting.
Alpha Damien. He was my future fiancee. The man I was to get engaged to. And he didn't look like he knew it was going to be me either. Fate was really a cruel game and we were its puppet.
“Mr. Adam, is something wrong?” Mira asked, her eyes travelling from mine to him.
“Is she really the option we have.” He sounded displeased as he asked and I felt so ashamed of myself but I had to stay strong. The sooner we sign the documents ,the sooner my sister can start surgery.
“Yes.” Mira replied and he sighed.
“Fine. She'll do,” he turned to me and handed me a pen which I clumsily took from his grip. “Read through carefully before signing.”
I looked at the paper which already had his signature at the designated area before I carefully read the agreement. It stated that we would only be together for 6 months before we divorce and I would leave with specific properties of his as payment for the deal. There were also certain rules to our marriage agreement, some of which were ridiculous. However, the last one caught my attention.
Alpha Adams didn't want any sort of physical touch or affection between us u less it was necessary which could be Infront of his mother or the media but asides that, I shouldn't expect him to play the role of a loving husband/mate.
I shut my eyes and took a deep breath to hold back my tears. I promised didn't I? That I would do anything to ensure I didn't loose my sister even If it meant selling my soul to the devil. This was even as bad as it. I never expected love anywhere else after Joel so I might as well settle for this.
Without hesitation, I picked the pen and made to sign.
“You've read the rules? The agreement? You're sure you want to go through with this?” I turned to see he had a bewilrded confused look in his face as he flared at me.
Was he expecting me to run away with my tail between my legs?
I signed the documents before I dropped the pen.
“Yes I have, and I agree to be your lawfully wedded wife Adam Hugo.”
