Chapter 7 Becoming Neighbors with Kane
Evelyn's POV
My heart was pounding violently, as if something inside my bones was trying to burst out. This feeling was strange and restless, surging up from within. My body hurt badly, accompanied by a burning sensation on my skin. I couldn't even speak.
I forced myself to bear the intense discomfort and slapped Kane's chest hard. "Kane, put me down..."
"Just wait a bit longer." Kane's voice came from above my head as he sped up.
But I couldn't care about anything else right now. I could only follow my body's instincts and pushed him away with all my strength.
Kane clearly wasn't prepared for my sudden move, and his body swayed in the air. He quickly folded his golden-red wings and brought us down rapidly, but landed steadily on the open ground not far from the Starflame Tower dorms.
Before I could steady myself, "Evelyn, so you're the one getting all tangled up with that freak from the Phoenix Clan?" shouted a senior boy in a black robe leading the group, with several others following behind him.
Before I could react, Kane rushed in front of me, blocking me behind him. His right palm ignited with golden-red flames again, and even standing behind him, I could feel the pressure.
I quickly grabbed his wrist, and I could even hear the tension and hoarseness in my voice: "I can handle this."
Water was still dripping from my body, but the burning sensation made me feel irritable. I didn't know how much longer I could hold on.
"In that case, then you can both..."
Before the boy could finish, my body suddenly swayed, as if something was rampaging inside me, finally breaking through some kind of restraint.
Then, a strange force surged through my body along with my blood. All the sounds around me were instantly amplified, and I could even seem to hear the heartbeat of the boy across from me, drilling clearly into my ears.
Out of the corner of my eye, I saw my hands glowing faintly, with semi-transparent hoof outlines appearing and disappearing at my fingertips.
"You... you..." The senior boy pointed at me, stuttering.
The people across from me were clearly scared by my state and scrambled away, and I didn't even have time to say a word.
Now that only Kane and I were left, the tension in my body slowly faded, and I gradually recovered.
"Evelyn..." Kane walked from behind me to my side, his eyes fixed tightly on me.
He looked like he wanted to reach out and touch me, but stopped halfway in the air.
"Thank you." Kane lowered his hand that was hanging in mid-air.
"You saved me, I should be the one saying thank you!"
I still hadn't figured out how everything happened, what was going on with my hands just now, and why they had changed back to normal now.
A breeze blew by, and I felt cold.
"Let's go back to the dorm!" I spoke first, breaking the silence in the air.
I quickened my pace toward the dorm, with Kane following behind me in silence the whole way.
Soon we arrived at my room, and Kane stood at the door waiting for me.
I leaned against the door, my heartbeat inexplicably racing, even though I wasn't feeling uncomfortable anymore.
After a moment, I was about to go to the closet to find clean clothes to change into when my gaze swept across the mirror. My clothes were clinging to my body, my hair was wet against my cheeks, but my hands had returned to normal.
I quickly walked to the magic wardrobe. Perhaps sensing my need, it automatically produced a beige hoodie and loose jeans.
I quickly changed, casually dried my hair with a towel, and although I knew there was nothing there, I deliberately pulled the hoodie sleeves down to cover my hands tightly.
I opened the door. Kane was still leaning against the wall by the door, his silver-white long hair still dripping water, but he didn't care at all. His gaze immediately turned to me.
"Let's go eat." I said with a smile, walking forward side by side with him.
There weren't many people in the cafeteria at this time. I got my food and found a corner seat as usual.
Kane glanced at my plate, frowned slightly, and directly picked up a piece of steak and put it on my plate.
I looked up at him, but he just kept his head down eating, expressionless.
"Kane, thank you for saving me earlier."
I took off a pendant from around my neck - it was an unpolished black stone with some ancient runes carved on it that I couldn't understand.
"This is for you." I handed him the stone pendant.
Kane paused, looking at the stone, but didn't reach out to take it.
"This is a magic stone my grandpa got for me. Although I don't know exactly what it does, Grandpa said it could protect me. Now I'm giving it to you, hoping it can protect you from harm too." I looked at him and said seriously.
"No." Kane shook his head, still not looking at me, his voice somewhat low.
"I'm giving it to you because I really want you to have it. Just take it. If you hadn't saved me earlier, you'd probably be sitting here eating alone right now." I said half-jokingly, but saw a flash of panic in his eyes.
Kane gripped the pendant tightly, and as if making up his mind, said in a low voice: "Thank you."
He picked it up and put it around his neck, carefully hiding the pendant inside his clothes.
When we left the cafeteria, it was already dark.
We walked back to the dorm together, but when I wanted to return to my room, I discovered that my original room had disappeared.
A brand new door appeared, moved next to Kane's room.
The nameplate on the door still had my name carved on it: Evelyn.
"What's this?" I looked at Kane beside me, confused.
Kane shrugged, still expressionless. But maybe this was better - after all, in this strange school, he was the only person who made me feel safe.
After pushing open the door, the inside was still arranged according to my preferences. I looked back at Kane, "Want to come in and watch a movie?"
Kane's hand on the doorknob stopped. Those deep golden eyes stared at me with a stern look. He walked toward me with big steps, and that sense of pressure came again, making me instinctively step back.
"Do you know what you're doing?" Kane's voice was low and serious.
"I'm inviting you to watch a movie." I was a bit nervous, my fingers unconsciously gripping the hem of my clothes.
The pressure from Kane intensified. He leaned down slightly, staring into my eyes, "Don't casually let unfamiliar men into your private space, especially at night."
"But you're not unfamiliar!" I lowered my head and quietly protested.
