Chapter 4

James strode toward the room where Hayden was, but after just two steps, a figure came screaming and lunged at him.

"Stop! You jailbreaker! How dare you touch my father?"

James frowned and calmly sidestepped, easily dodging Juniper's outburst. His tone carried a chill, "What do you mean by that, Thomas family?"

Juniper missed and looked embarrassed. Then she remembered something, put her hands on her hips, and spoke righteously, "What do I mean? The Thomas family has called in the top medical teams from home and abroad, and they're all helpless! What can a jailbreaker like you do? If we let him try, Dad might die right away!"

Even Owen stood by with a forced smile, making no move to stop her.

Clearly, he didn't think James could heal Hayden either.

James laughed in anger. Him, the leader of the Asura Killer Legion, actually being doubted like this?

"Fine, since you don't believe me, there's no point wasting my time here."

With that, James turned and walked away crisply and cleanly.

He was only here for the sake of Aiden and Hayden's friendship. If the Thomas family wouldn't appreciate it, he wasn't going to beg for trouble.

Just as James was about to step through the door, a weak, elderly, raspy voice rang out, "James, come in."

Everyone's faces changed at those words, especially Juniper's, which turned dark as ink.

"Dad, this probably isn't..." Juniper didn't finish before Hayden dropped a bombshell, "What? I'm not dead yet, and you're already this eager?"

His tone was still flat and weak, but the natural authority of a superior made everyone's bodies tremble instinctively.

The crowd parted to let James through.

The room was filled with the smell of disinfectant and medicine, but it couldn't hide the rotten scent of someone near death.

Hayden waved at James with a kind face, "James, let Grandpa take a good look at you. You're quite the catch. It's Aiden's good fortune to have a grandson like you. I can die without regrets now that I've seen you marry Evelyn before I go."

A flicker of emotion passed deep in James's eyes, and his voice softened, "Grandpa, don't worry. I'll save you. You'll live a long, long life."

This wasn't empty talk. From the first glance at Hayden, James could tell he was meant for a long life.

Now, it looked like someone had deliberately harmed him!

Before Hayden could speak, James pulled out a small red brocade box.

When he opened it, a thick medicinal fragrance filled the air. Just smelling it made people feel more alert.

Suddenly, there was a rush of footsteps bursting through the door.

Juniper rushed in with the Thomas family's top medical team, yelling sharply, "It's him! This jailbreaker is trying to feed Dad some weird stuff! Grab him quick! Don't let him succeed!"

The lead doctor was an old man with white hair but sharp eyes, named Eugene Bailey, known as a miracle doctor.

He was skilled in medicine, with legends saying he could bring people back from the brink if there was even a spark of life. The Thomas family had paid a fortune to get him!

After taking just a couple of steps in, Eugene caught the strange scent. His eyelids twitched, and he dropped to his knees.

The sudden drama stunned everyone.

Eugene ignored them, his eyes burning with near-obsessive excitement, his face devout like he'd seen a god, "Is this the legendary Nine Turns Soul Return Elixir? Can you give me half? No, even a little bit—just the size of a fingernail."

The room went dead silent. Everyone's faces showed disbelief. Eugene was always mysterious and compassionate in front of people.

This kind of breakdown was unheard of!

Seeing Eugene's trembling hand reaching out, James didn't hide his disgust and shot back, "If I give you some, Grandpa won't have enough, and if something goes wrong, can you take responsibility?"

The words hit like a bucket of cold water, sobering Eugene up.

He scrambled to his feet and apologized, "Sir, I'm really sorry. I've never seen a legendary medicine like this before, so I lost it."

The Thomas family stared at Eugene, waiting for an explanation.

Eugene didn't disappoint and explained clearly, "The Nine Turns Soul Return Elixir comes from the ancient royal pharmacy. Legend says it can save anyone with even a trace of life left! Unfortunately, the recipe is lost, and modern ingredients can't match the originals perfectly, so it's about to vanish from the world. There were five in total. Two were used on Novaria's founding hero, two were bought by a mystery merchant during wartime chaos and vanished, and the last one should still be in the national treasury."

By the end, Eugene looked at James with curiosity. Did he have some hidden background?

One Nine Turns Soul Return Elixir changed everything in an instant.

Juniper, who had been so harsh before, went pale then flushed, her face a mess. She gritted her teeth and retorted, "If this thing is as amazing as you say, how could a jailbreaker have it? What if it's fake?"

Fake? That was questioning Eugene's judgment?

Eugene, always called a miracle doctor, looked upset and was about to speak when a sharp yell cut him off.

"Mom! Dad! What are you doing?"

It was Evelyn.

She'd been on the same flight as James, so she was home, and Juniper hadn't told her.

Panic flashed across Juniper's face before she raised her voice and snapped, "Why are you here? This jailbreaker is pretending to be some quack! Come back after Mom handles it!"

Juniper just couldn't stand James! She wanted to call off the wedding! And she didn't tell Evelyn to protect her reputation!

On the way over, Evelyn had heard the whole story from the Thomas family butler. She looked at James with complicated eyes and said hoarsely, "Mom, don't say that. He's from the Asura Killer Legion."

Everyone gasped in shock, even Eugene looked relieved.

The Asura Killer Legion had connections in both the underworld and the authorities, sitting at the top of the power chain—even the country had to give them room!

Now it made sense that the Asura Killer Legion had a Nine Turns Soul Return Elixir!
