Chapter 3 SUBWAY DANGER

POV - Hazel

“Not so cocky anymore, white bitchy wolf?” the first awful man who approached me gloats in my face, his breath smelling of beer and something rotten.

I want to use my powers to repel them, but I am worried of hurting other innocent people, the space is too small, and I don’t want to cause an explosion by accident.

Why did I put myself in this situation? I should have listened to Derek; I should have brought a bodyguard. Well, too late to cry on spelt milk, I better think of something to get them away from me without hurting anyone.

I could Alpha command them to let me go, it should work on all wolves, I think. Before I can even say anything, suddenly the window of the door beside me crushes into million pieces, one arm comes through and the men holding my arms behind my back is suddenly flung to the other side of the carriage.

A loud growl familiar to my ears makes the people on the train tremble in fear, and when the doors finally slide open, two strong arms catch me in their warm embrace, making me feel safe again.

I inhale greedily his soothing scent of white musk and vanilla, trying to get back my composure; I don’t want to let those bastards see how much they have unsettled me.

Derek moves back a little to look at me, and another growl leaves his luscious lips, probably noticing the bruise on my cheek. Just my luck, I will have to reschedule my ballet class, I can’t go in front of the kids like this, I will scare the hell out of them.

“It’s fine, honey, it doesn’t hurt much,” I say, caressing his chest, “and thank you for coming to my rescue.”

His preoccupied expression turns into a serious one, and I know I am in for a long scolding.

“You won’t get away with a thank you this time. You are in a lot of trouble.”

I turn my gaze somewhere else, trying to find a distraction to change this unfavorable subject, and finally notice all the mess that is going on around us. I was so focused on Derek, lost in our mate bubble of peace, that I didn’t see all the policemen busy arresting my attackers. Some are going easily, others are putting up a fight, but the policemen are well equipped with teasers and tranquilizers, and in a short time manage to subdue them all.

“Did you call the police?” I asked Derek, a little perplexed. It’s not his style, he’s more for using brute force and beat everyone bloody, well, like most Alphas’ do anyway.

“I did not. But that’s how I’ve found out you were in trouble. A woman on the subway saw what was happening and alarmed the police, who called me, because I’ve asked them to keep tabs on you, so here I am.”

“But how did you get here so fast? You were on the other side of the city?”

“I was, but you are not the only one with powers, right?”

That’s right, Derek can control the wind, a power gifted him by the Moon Goddess to help us win the fight against the people who experimented on werewolves and tried to create a new mutant race, a mix between werewolves and humans. I can hijack his power when we are close enough, which has come quite handy in many difficult situations.

“Thank you, for helping me,” I say with sincerity.

“I’d rather hear you say, «I am sorry Derek, you were right like always, and next time I’ll listen to you, and won’t put myself in dangerous situations like this one».”

“Nah, we both know I am not going to say that.” Even if he is annoyingly right most of the time, but I am never going to admit it in front of him, his ego is big enough as it is.

“I thought as much, but hope never dies, you know.”

“Yeah, I guess, but enough of these clichés; let’s get out of here before someone else tries to strangle me or worse.”

“Ok, let me just have a word with the police officer, to see if we can go,” Derek says, before he releases me from his hug and approaches the chief policeman.

He’s much taller and broader than the young officer, and I can’t help admiring his broad back, his muscles straining against the white men shirt, and his cute backside. Would it be ok if I gave it a small slap? Those black tailored trousers enhance his round bum bum perfectly.

I keep eating up his gorgeousness until a cold chill runs down my spine, because I have just noticed that he’s wearing similar clothes to the ones in the dream. I can’t remember if they were exactly the same, but they are close enough for my brain to make the connection.

“We need to get out of here. NOW!” I mindlink Derek urgently.

He immediately spins on his heels ready for an attack or for a calamity, I am not sure which. “What is it?”

“Your clothes! They are the same as the dream and we are in a subway station, together! We must leave immediately!” I don’t care who hears our conversation, and what they’ll think about me dreaming stuff; we are in danger, I am sure of it.

Derek looks like he’s going to argue, but then he sees the sheer panic in my gaze and decides to get along with my request. He excuses himself from the officer, puts an arm around my waist, and gently guides me towards the stairs that lead to the exit.

My mind is in overdrive, I am afraid that any second men wearing black will run down the stairs firing their guns at us, they will shoot Derek and kill him.

“Kitten, you really need to calm down. You’re making all the lights flicker, and the last thing we need is to destroy the public property. We’ll be fine, this is not your dream, I have my powers, and you have yours, even if some crazy men try shooting us, they won’t ever succeed.”

“I know, but I just can’t help it…the idea of loosing you is too terrifying; I could never let that happen,” I reply still panicked, trying to suppress my anxiety, but failing completely, the memory of that horrible dream still fresh in my mind.

We rush up the endless stairs, until we finally reach the top, and as soon as I am met with fresh air, I gulp it down greedily; I felt like I was suffocating down there, although it was definitely just my fear choking me.

Derek massages my back in circles, helping me get my bearings back, while his presence gives the comfort I need. I could never imagine a life without him in it, he’s my life force, my anchor in the storm.

“Feeling better now?”

“Yes, I’ll feel even better if we put some more distance between us and this underground death hole,” I exhale heavily.

“Then how about I give you a very special private ride on the exclusive Derek Airlines? Our flights are equipped with all the comforts: a shoulder to cry on, firm muscle to hold on tight and the best tool to pleasure, you won’t find anything like it in all the U.S.!”

“Aren’t you the silliest Alpha around?” I comment, shaking my head, but also taking him on his offer. I climb on his back, not waiting for an invitation, and land a light kiss on his cheek, because I know that he’s only putting on a show to distract me from my nearly panic attack. The sweetest Alpha around, that’s what he really is.

“I might ask for another one of those for payment after the landing,” he comments cheerily.

“And you might get much more than that at our arrival if you take off immediately.”

“I like the sound of that.”

Derek doesn’t waste any more time; he soars fast into the air and starts flying superfast in the direction of the packhouse. I have to hold on tight not to be thrown back by the blowing wind; luckily Derek’s hands on my thighs keep me firmly in place, and his broad back, even if hard with muscles, is still comfortably snuggly.

In no time we land in the packhouse gardens, and as soon as our feet touch the earth, we are ambushed by Meera, the pack’s Beta female, who looks completely panicked.

“Have you seen Damon? He went to help you, but he’s been unreachable ever since. I don’t know, I have a very bad feeling, it’s like I can’t feel his wolf anymore.”

Derek goes rigid beside me; after what happened to Alice, our previous Gamma, who was poisoned by our enemy and turned against me, the idea of losing another of his best friends is like an ever-hanging nightmare for him. And for me too; Damon is like a big brother to me, I don’t even want to think about losing him.

Please, let him be fine, let him be fine.
