Chapter 3 Three
“You guys have just broken my rule, and you should know that you have committed an offense which is punishable by the law.”
I said,
But none of them took me seriously.
Alex stood up and walked towards me beaming in delight.
“Lizzy, drop this act and behave yourself.”
He whispered in my ear.
“Excuse me?”
I raised a brow, marveled at what he had just said.
“These people you see here can change our lives for good. Release Mr. Mathew from prison, clear his name from this accusation, and watch as we swim in dollars.”
Wow!
Just wow!
Alex has lost his mind.
Does he think I will be bought off with a bribe?
“Really?”
I decided to play along.
“Yes, Mrs. Alexander. We are done bargaining the price with your husband. The next thing is for you to agree to it and then this,”
He pointed to a huge black bag in the middle of the living room,
“It's all yours.”
I bobbed my head, looking at them one after the other.
“There is a billion dollars inside the bag, Lizzy, and it is all ours. Just do as they want and it will help ours. You know what? You can transfer to another city where we will live our lives in love and,”
The audacity!
I pulled out my gun from its holder and pointed it towards them.
“What do you guys take me?”
I asked, but they were all trembling to even utter a word.
“Stop doing this, Lizzy, you are ruining this.”
Alex said, stepping away from me.
I swear, I thought Alex was only cruel, I didn't know he was drenched in the pool of greed.
How did he even come up with this?
And how did he end up turning into a fool?
The Alex I knew years ago was a good person who only went after anything pure.
“You guys are under arrest for trying to bribe a detective.”
When I turned towards Alex, he was no longer there.
He must have run away, but that isn't a concern.
He is my husband, I will deal with him later.
“Detective Lizzy, please do not do this.”
They pleaded, but it was too late.
Bribing me is one of the biggest mistakes anyone could ever make in their life.
It won't only ruin their reputation, but it will also push me to dig out dirt on them.
“Lock them up in the headquarters. And if anyone comes to take them away, arrest that person too.”
“Yes, Detective Lizzy, we will do as you said.”
They chorused and matched the three of them to the car.
“And that bag over there.”
I pointed to the money bag on the floor.
“Put it in the evidence room.”
Phhhh.
These people have just messed up my mind I swear.
But no biggy,
When I am done with this case, I will deal with them one after the other.
“Mr. Mathew’s family is not in the country, Detective Lizzy.”
Oh, no wonder the house is empty.
These politicians think they are intelligent.
They send their family out of the country during the election because they know the mess it will cause.
I searched the whole room in the house except one of the rooms which was locked.
Unfortunately, Sophia’s Nanny called when I was about to break into the room.
“Sophia is sick,”
She said over the phone.
It shocked me to the bone to hear that my baby was ill.
“We will continue the investigation tomorrow. Do not make any mistake like you did today.”
I warned before rushing home.
My baby was wrapped in a towel, and her body was so hot.
“Her temperature has risen, Ma’am.”
The nanny said worriedly.
Without wasting time, I carried her out of the room and rushed her to the hospital.
“It’s only a fever, Detective Lizzy, do not worry. I will give her a shot now and she will be fine.”
Thank goodness!
Phew.
While at the hospital, I tried calling Alex, but he didn't answer my call.
I even sent him messages, but none were replied to.
Alex loves Sophia so much,
Or was that also fake?
If he truly loves her as he had said, then he should have fled here when he received the message.
Hmmm.
Alex.
“Lay her on her bed gently, and do not cover her with a duvet, use a soft towel.”
The nanny bobbed her head and took Sophia to her room.
Exhausted,
I dragged my feet inside the room and let out a deep breath.
“You are back.”
Gosh!
My soul nearly jumped out of my body.
“You startled me.”
I gasped, holding my chest.
Alex stepped out behind the door and tossed a paper on the bed.
“Didn't you get the message I sent you earlier?”
I asked him, but he ignored me.
“Are you still going to be strong-headed?”
Uhn?
“What do you want this time?”
I sneered and dropped my jacket on the bed.
“Will you release those people and Mr. Mathew from the headquarters, resign from work, and follow me, or do you want to keep doing what you want?”
Ahhh
Alex,
Why doesn't he stop wasting his time on my job?
“I will keep doing what I want.”
I said, keeping a straight face.
“In that case,”
He stood up from the stool and pointed to the paper on the bed.
“Sign that paper and we are done for good.”
My heartbeat ceased for a second, but a surge of bliss gushed inside my heart.
Is he for real?
Then I will be the one to gain from this.
After all,
He has been a setback in my job for weeks.
Now I can have my freedom to do whatever I want.
I picked up the paper, read it carefully to be sure he wasn't playing tricks.
And when I was sure he didn't want anything from me, or willing to give me anything, I signed the paper.
“Well, I am now free.”
I laughed victoriously and left the room.
“And when you are leaving, go away with your daughter, I don't need her!”
Of course, Alex.
I won't even make the mistake of leaving my baby in your care.
