Chapter 3 Lethia
Lethia’s POV
“Did you like your breakfast?” I asked Talitha.
I couldn’t eat with her. Lisa began the morning shift by informing us that Luna Laura would be visiting later with Alpha Castiel.
“I love all the food here.” Talitha grinned broadly.
“Good.” I smiled in relief, kissing her adorable, chubby cheek.
“I’ll be busy today,” I said sadly.
“I’m fine,” Talitha said. “Mommy doesn’t just take care of me.”
"Thank you for understanding me, my dear." My eyes were glossy with tears as I stroked her cheek, but this was the trade-off of my job.
“I am proud that my mother is a doctor.” Talitha’s face radiated joy. I blushed.
“I’m proud to have a daughter like you, too.” I hugged her tightly and kissed the top of her head.
She never lost her appetite, but Talitha's body became increasingly thin.
It wasn't just Talitha; the others experienced the same thing.
After our investigation, we discovered that the children who lost weight had been battling the virus for over six months.
The virus appeared a year and a half ago.
Talitha was infected with the virus eight months ago and has been treated at this clinic for that long.
“Hey, Doctor.” Belia smiled broadly as I entered her office.
“Hi, Belia.” I waved my hand as I listened to Eleanor, the nurse, explain Belia's blood pressure results and updates on her condition.
“Well, look at you. Your fever’s gone," I said to Belia with a big smile. “You’re amazing.”
“Of course. I want to be the greatest female warrior in my group.” Belia chuckled, her cheeks flushing.
Eleanor and I glanced at each other. We were sad, but the best we could do was support her.
I moved on to check the other children, listening patiently as they complained about their aches and discomfort.
“Alpha Castiel and Luna Laura have arrived.”
I stopped writing for a moment, but I breathed a sigh of relief that I wasn’t their tour guide.
Although I wanted to show the woman that I was now a doctor, I preferred not to meet them.
However, I couldn't carry out my plan to leave them secretly.
"Beta Monica?" My breath caught in my throat when I heard the woman's voice, which I still remembered so clearly. "I didn't expect us to meet here."
Beta Monica approached Luna Laura.
Without realizing it, my fingers tightened around the fabric of my white coat.
My heart was pounding. I couldn't leave because my conversation with Beta Monica wasn't over yet.
Okay, I wouldn't look at them at all. I skimmed through the patient charts in my hands.
“Lethia?” I gasped in surprise as my shoulders were pulled back. My eyes met Luna Laura’s wide-eyed stare.
"Wow, you really became a doctor!" Luna Laura patted my shoulder after looking me over from head to toe. It wasn’t a compliment.
“Why didn’t you tell me she was a doctor here? You came here yesterday. How come you didn’t see her?” Luna Laura returned to stand next to Alpha Castiel with an annoyed face and pouting lips.
I didn't direct my gaze to Alpha Castiel. Eventually, I locked eyes with a girl holding hands with him.
The girl was about Talitha's age.
"Why should I tell you?" asked Alpha Castiel.
"Just tell me. No need for an excuse," Luna Laura said.
Then she asked Alpha Castiel a bold question. "Are you happy to see your ex-mate?"
The air seemed to still, and my eyes were drawn to Alpha Castiel, who was glaring at Luna Laura with evident displeasure.
My pupils dilated as I saw the nurses in the distance. They were listening to us.
“She’s a doctor at this clinic.” Alpha Castiel refused to answer clearly.
"She betrayed you.” Luna Laura raised her voice deliberately, smiling crookedly as she glanced at me.
My fists clenched tightly. Emotions welled up in my chest.
You have to clear up that misunderstanding. Those words echoed in my head.
“You shouldn’t talk like that,” Alpha Castiel warned her. “Our relationship ended well. That’s all in the past.”
My fists loosened. I bit my lower lip, unable to defend myself even though I was no longer tied to them.
"You're being far too kind to the woman who broke your heart," Luna Laura sneered, her eyes filled with the same old resentment as she looked at me.
But I no longer lowered my head like a fool. My gaze was straight at her.
“Mommy,” Talitha called me cheerfully without feeling the tension in this corridor.
Hector pushed Talitha's wheelchair hesitantly, fighting with himself whether he should bring Talitha to me or take her away.
But whatever decision Hector made was meaningless because Luna Laura had already seen them.
“Is that your daughter?” Luna Laura’s reaction was the same as Alpha Castiel’s yesterday. Disbelief.
She asked a question that embarrassed me. “How could you be pregnant? Is that really your daughter?”
