Chapter 4

Karl.

“Improve your stance, Nate. Your enemy will have an easy time taking you down if you use that stance in battle.” I move closer to the young male and guide him, trying to correct his stance. “Here, widen your legs, and don’t balance on your hind leg if you’re going on the offensive.”

I continue my inspection, taking note of my young warriors’ improvements. I believe in training every day. You never know when your enemy is lurking around, preparing to strike.

I rule my pack with what some people may refer to as an iron fist but it’s all really for their good. We’ve been targeted by so many enemies in the past and I don’t want to leave an opening or weakness for my enemies to exploit because I sure do have a lot.

Many people call me the Demon Alpha; the Alpha that killed his mate and brother. It is fine by me as long as they don’t call me to my face. They will never know what I had to endure from those two they claim I killed, but the title has helped instill fear in some of the lesser packs that are planning to attack us.

“Your presence is needed at the border, my Lord.” A messenger said as he bowed his head deeply, waiting for a response.

“I will be there,” I dismiss him right away and stalk around, looking with pride at the young warriors training. Whoever needs my presence can wait until I am ready to attend to them.

My pack–Lycan Bloodline Pack–is the greatest pack in history, as well as the most ruthless. We begin training young boys from the age of 16 upward and by the time they become young men, they are highly trained and just as deadly and stealthy as an assassin.

The program has been my idea so that in case of war where we have to leave our homes, we wouldn’t be leaving our women and children helpless and defenseless.

I sigh as I decide to go attend to whatever needs my attention at the border before returning to my bedchambers. I think of my mistresses waiting for me impatiently as I chuckle, moving with urgency.

“Alpha, you need to see this,” my Beta remarks immediately after I come into view, urgency present in his voice.

I move closer to the clearing he points at and I see a young woman lying naked and unconscious on the ground. There’s animal blood smeared all over her body.

“So, what has this got to do with me?” Irritation welled inside me. Did they call me out here just to see an unconscious woman or what?

That’s when I smell it. She’s a werewolf; a werewolf on my land. And since she’s not from my pack, that means she’s either been sent from another pack into my lands or she’s a rogue that has just wandered in.

Either way, I hate trespassers. I move closer to inspect her and I pick up her distinct scent. She’s from the Dynamite pack!

“How did she get her without notice?” I growl as I turn to my Beta and a group of warriors around him. “Who was on patrol?”

Two men step forward, gulping nervously as they keep their heads down, avoiding my eyes.

“Explain yourselves.” My patience is already running thin and I’m itching for a release.

“We were both patrolling: Aiden on the east side while I was on the west side. I first perceived the scent of the lion’s blood on her and came to investigate. I called Aiden too and we went together.” One of the men speaks nervously.

“Stop mincing your words and tell me exactly what happened here, Ethan. Or trust me, the next scent of blood that will permeate the air will be yours.”

He audibly gulped and cleared his throat, speaking a lot faster. “She was using her hands to drag herself along the forest grounds when we got here. It seemed like she was running away from something. As she saw us, she reached out and whimpered for us to help her,” he concludes.

“Lock her up in the dungeon. I’ll be deciding what to do with her in the meantime.” I turn to leave. There is nothing else to do here and I really need a release for my anger.

Dynamite pack has been our sworn enemy for generations now and I don’t buy the idea of the ‘damsel in distress’ role that the unconscious woman was playing. My Beta–Lucas–runs to meet me and we walk alongside as I head to my palace.

“Alpha, don’t you think she should be treated first? She’s injured and weak, probably starving. She won’t survive in the dungeons this way.”

“She could have been sent as a spy and as soon as we take care of her and accept her into our pack, she could destroy our home that we have spent so long to secure in a very short time,” I reply in a no-nonsense tone to him.

“Or she could actually be someone in distress that has no ulterior motive and we’ll be doing a lot of good by helping her. How about that, Alpha?” my jaw ticks at his tone. I stop in my tracks and spin around to face him.

“You will do well to remember your place, Lucas. I am the Alpha and my order is that she should be moved to the dungeon immediately. I would rather she die an innocent person than go against my instincts to shelter her only for her to betray me. I will not risk the lives of my people that way. Do you understand?” I look down at him and he remains quiet, looking like someone who’s meditating.

“Do I need to make myself clear again, Lucas?” this time around, he shakes his head and quickly mutters a no.

I nod in satisfaction and continue my trek to the palace as he replies behind me, “I’ll go see to it that she is taken to the dungeon, Alpha.”

Good. I’ll leave her there for a few hours, maybe even a few days. By the time her mind is going crazy from the darkness, the loneliness, the pain from her injuries, or even starvation, I’ll go visit her and make sure she breaks and confesses the truth.

They don’t call me Demon Alpha for nothing. I earned that name. Standing at six feet seven, I’m the tallest man I know and the only Lycan existing. The other werewolf Alphas pay homage to me as their King.

And so, I will not let a small uncivilized pack such as Dynamite take my dignity or try to outsmart me. I will beat them at their own game and it will be so easy.

I resist the urge to laugh out loud like a madman as I think of all the horrible ways I will break the Dynamite spy. I just hope she has no family waiting for her safe return because I can’t promise not to damage her permanently or even kill her.

My beast is always looking for bloodshed and even now, as I walk back home, I can feel him stir in the confines of my head, practically howling at the idea of what we both want to do to her.

“Dynamite spy, just you wait. I will have fun breaking you. I just hope you have what it takes to interest me, so your days might be prolonged just a little while longer,” I mutter under my breath and chuckle to myself.
